One Month Old

Max turns one month old this week. He has had a very busy month so far. He is getting very big and has already outgrown his horse outfit - it was one of his favorites. At the two week check up he had gained over a pound and weighed 7lbs 1 oz. The doctor was amazed at how strong he is. From the time he came home from the hospital he has been able to hold his head up and has a very strong grip. It's a good thing he is so strong because he does not like tummy time very much. Usually after a few minutes of tummy time he gets mad and wants to be done with it. He is beginning to focus on people and things and likes to look at his surroundings. Some of Max's favorite activites include eating (a lot), sleeping, watching his mobile go around, listening to music, reading books and swinging in his swing. We have had a couple of big outings in the past week and he handled them very well. He even got to go to mom's school and meet the staff and students. Below is a video of Max and his mobile.

Max's Birthday - January 4, 2010

Maxwell James Harkey was born at 2:52 pm on Monday, January 4, 2010 - 6 lbs 12 oz, 19.25 inches. We arrived at the hospital a little before midnight so it was quite a long day for mom. By the time Max was ready, the room was full of nurses and doctors...at least ten were there. Max had a small temperature (101.8) and so the pediatrician watched closely and did some blood work. Everything came back fine and we were sent home on Wednesday morning. The first night home was quite an experience. The little man did just fine, but his dad needs to work on controlling his panic everytime the little man sneezes or grunts (or moves for that matter).

On Thursday he went for his first doctor's visit since leaving the hospital. Max didn't have jaundice or anything, but he did start losing weight...a little more than normal. So for the first week or so, he had an extra bottle of formula. Because his weight dropped so much (he was at 5 lbs 15 oz), they asked us to come back the following day. Overnight the guy put on 4.5 oz. He's quite the eater when given the opportunity. The doctors told us everything was fine at that point and to come back for our his standard two week check up.
